Poll - Splurging on Hair Products

Just Add a Splash of Color

Blazer - Ralph Lauren, Shirt - Zara, Skirt - F21, Shoes - Sam Edelman

I don't know if you are like this, but when I know I'm gonna have a crazy day at school, I like to wear something bright to cheer me up throughout the day.  I decided to throw on this orange skirt because its light, airy, and feminine.

Tips for a Natural Newbie

These are tips that I have a for a new natural or a re-dedicated natural.  I hope you enjoy!

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize! - Its incredibly important to moisturize your hair on a daily basis.  I think finding out the perfect moisturizer is all about trial and error.  When I first went natural, I loved using Luster's S-Curl Activator and Moisturizer.  Coconut oil was my go to oil for sealing in moisture.  I made sure to moisturize my hair in the morning and right before bed, and I still do this.  You must moisturize your hair to prevent breakage and retain length.

Protect your Hair - Don't sleep on wrapping your hair every night with a satin scarf.  Wrapping your hair protects it from breakage and also helps to retain moisture.

Wash Your Hair in Sections - To avoid tangling, especially when you hair grows longer, you should twist or braid your hair in big sections (usually five to eight).  After wetting your hair you can undo one section at a time and saturate it with your shampoo or conditioner and braid/twist it back up.  Then rinse your hair out while it is braided in sections.

Do Not Detangle Regularly For More Defined Curls - I know this sounds crazy, but if you want to preserve your curls or you want your curls to pop, you shouldn't detangle/brush your hair frequently.  However, you hair will be more prone to tangling.  This method works best for "wash-and-go's."

Define Your Curls with Gel - If I would like my curls to stay well defined for days, I use the gel method.  I created a video tutorial for this method.  I especially loved this look when my hair was very short after my big chop, my small spiral curls looked amazing.

Detangle - Detangling your hair prevents knots, breakage and split ends.  The most important thing a new natural should know is that you should NEVER brush or detangle your hair dry.  It causes breaking and damage.  Prior to detangling, make sure that your hair is completely saturated in conditioner and use either a wide-tooth comb or denman brush.  Start brushing/combing from the tip of your hair to the root.

Deep Condition - I would recommend using a deep conditioning treatment once a week.  It will help moisturize and strengthen your hair.  I love using Queen Helene Cholesterol Conditioner.  I usually mix in glycerin, olive oil, and safflower oil into the conditioner.  As a matter of fact, I mix glycerin, olive oil, and safflower oil in all my conditioners.

Escape Artists

Jeneil Williams looks great in this editorial.  She has a beautiful complexion and the photographs almost look like paintings.  I especially love the the outfit with the snake print top and pencil skirt, that's what I like to call the "grown woman" look.

Sunburned Hair?

Were you aware that the sun can seriously damage your hair?  Luckily it only happens with extreme exposure to the sun.  When your hair gets "sunburned," it becomes brittle and dry and in some circumstances the hair cuticles will fuse together.  Some companies have started to put sunblock in hair products and others have simply manufactured sunblocks for hair.  If you know you will be out in the sun for a long period of time, err on the side of caution and protect yourself!

I Survived the Earthquake!

Blazer - F21, Top - Diesel, Jeans - F21, Shoes - Nine West

So, yesterday I experienced my very first earthquake, which was kind of surreal.  I honestly never even thought about earthquakes since I live on the east coast, but I'm glad no serious harm was done.  Plus, I decided to dress up for school, so if things came crashing down, at least I'd go out in style!  I also realized my hair looks extremely wild in these pictures...
